Sagarmath (Mt. Everest) National park covers an area of 1148 square km and is located in the famous Khumbu region. It lies the northeast of Kathmandu. The park includes the highest peak in the world, Mt. Everest (8848m) and several other familiar peaks such as: Lhotse (8516m), Nupste, Cho Oyu (8201m), Pumori, the beautiful Ama Dablam (6812m), Thamserku, Kwangde, Gyachungkang, Island Peak, etc. There are also many familiar mountain passes between 5000 to 6000 m, including Mera pass, Amphu Labtsa pass, Cho La and Renjo La pass. In this area one can see nearby bare rock and snow, as well as the glacial valley and the deep gorges. Flora and fauna abound, and include: silver fir, birch, rhododendron and juniper and fauna such as: Himalayan Thar (wild goat), musk deer, weasels, martin, Himalayan black bear, common Langurs, Jackals, and the Himalayan Mouse. Common birds are the impeayn Pheasant, blood pheasbt, red-billed cough and the yellow billed cough. Elevations range from 2,848m where you can do both trekking as described below:

 

Everest circuit: Lukla-Everest base camp-Kalpattar-Cho La pass-Gokyo Lake/Ri-Lukla trek

Duration: 20 days

Trek start/end: At Lukla

Grade: Strenuous

Trek style: Teahouse/Lodge trek

Best time: March/April/May and October/November/December

Highest elevation: Kalpattar 5545m

Ethnic group: Majority of Sherpas

The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and passing shepra villages along the Dhuda Kosi valley thought beautiful pine tree and rhododendron tree, to Namche bazzar. Namche is the famous destination of Khumbu where trekkers take acclimating. Namche is also known as Nauje among Sherpa, this thriving settlement is a primary gateway for trekkers and climbers. There can see finest views of Mountains around Namche. One can see the Sherpa people and experience the colorful market every Saturday at Namche.   

 

The Khumbu region has been home to the Sherpa people for about 500 years, since their migration from eastern Tibet. The word Sherpas derived from the term Sharva, meaning the people living in the east. They retain much of the Tibetan culture. Despite their close affinity with the Tibetan Language, culture and religion. Sherpa feel as much Nepali as any other people.

 

Thame-Khumjung-Khunde villages are the Sherpa culture Trek, a day trip also possible from Namche Bazaar through Buddhist sites.

 

Gokyo is the scenic and a high-altitude trek (Dole-Machhermo-Gokyo) with dramatic views of Cho Oyo and Mt. Everest.

 

Cho La 5333m pass to Everest base camp to Kalapattar is adventure trek into high altitude with its breathtaking view of Mt. Everest. When you reach Kalpattar, you will happy. This small peak offers the best view one can find of Everest without climbing it. Actually, it is best place to see view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori etc.

 

Tengpoche is another famous place along the trail where you can see one monastery is the common gathering place to celebrate religious festivals such as Dumje and Mani Rimdu. You can see stupendous views of Everest, Lhoste, and Nuptse with more beautiful Ama Dablam in the background of the Thangbhoche Monastery.

Note: - Cho La pass is also possible from EBC side. If there is problem of Cho La pas due to bad weather or high altitude sickness, there is alternative way of Cho la pass that is easy.

 

Renjo La-Gokyo Lake-Cho La passes to Everest base camp trek:

Duration: 20 days

Trek start/end: At Lukla

Grade: Strenuous

Trek style: Teahouse/Lodge trek or Camping

Best time: March/April/May and October/November/December

Highest elevation: Kalpattar 5545m

Ethnic group: Majority of Sherpas

Lakes: Angladumba Tso 5100m, Taboche Tsho 4740m, Gokyo Lake (Dudh Pokhari) 4750m, Thonak Tsho 4870m, Ngozumba Tsho 4990m and Dried Lake 5297m etc.

 

From Thame, way to Renjo La is completely out of busy trails of Everest region. Sharpas have left their homeland in eastern Tibet and crossed Nangpa La to enter Solu Khumbu (Lunag, Lungden, Marlung, Thame and Namche).    

 

You follow the left side of the river and cross the bridge near Marlung, a yak settlement and walk continue to Lungden 4200m where is a small teahouse/Lodge (Renjo La support lodge). This teahouse/lodge is only opening in March/April and October/November. From Lungden, way is up.up to Angladumba Tso (Lake) 5100m. From Angladumba Tso, cross a moraine, take a traverse and pretty Up.Up.Up to summit of Renjo La 5345m. You can see splendid views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and so many other peaks from top of Renjo La. You can forget all problem of before summit of Renjo La when you will be at summit. Fixed rope might be required in case of snow because there is narrow way under the summit of Renjo La from Angladumba Tso side. There is all the way down to Gokyo from Renjo La that is much easier than going up…. Than after, you have a nice rest at Gokyo Lake side!

Mani Rindum Festival at Tengboche Monastery:

 

The most important festival in Tengboche is called the Mani Rimdu. It consists of a nine day meditation cycle and ends with a public blessing ceremony and the world renowned Mask Dances at Tengboche Monastery.

 

October 3rd to November 1st is the approximate dates of Mani Rimdu events. This year based on the Tibetan lunar calendar. These dates were given by Tengboche Rinpoche, Abbot of Tengboche Monastery. These dates may vary by one or two days depending on local events.

 

1/2) making of the sand mandala and tormas (sculptures made of made of colored butter and barley flour representing symbolic offerings)

3) Drupchen ceremonies start.

4) Practice dancing without masks

5) Wong (blessing ceremony for the general public)

6) Famous Mask Dances open to the public from 10.00 A.M. to 17.00 P.M. During the whole night there is traditional dancing by the Sherpa community. This is more interesting for the tourists.

This is a very high altitude trek through glacial valleys. Only good physical shape with mountaineering skills, well equipment and group should attempt this route.
